Implemented at the beginning of the nineteenth century and consolidated from 1905 onwards, the MPEG Ornithological Collection has almost 80,000 specimens distributed across traditional collections (taxidermy skins, liquid medium pieces and osteological material) including genetic material (tissues), it being the only national ornithological collection at the present time that supports a sub-collection of genetic resources (more than 3500 tissue samples, feathers and blood). In this respect, the MPEG Ornithological Collection is the first such collection in Brazil to follow the global trend of integrating traditional collections into other collections, geared towards the study of molecular systematics and population genetics in relation to the number of different types of birds.
