Caxiuanã National Forest

Located to the northeast of the state of Pará, the area has a total of 330 hectares and is the Biggest Conservation Unit in the Tocantins and Xingu interfluve. Created in 1961, the unit is partially housed within the municipalities of Melgaço and Portel and falls within the Anapu River basin. The dense Rain Forest of the lowlands covers 85% of this area, the remainder covered by Igapó Forest (19%) and patches of open vegetation. There are 1010 species of plants, 134 species of lichens, 33 species of macroscopic fungi and 746 species of animals registered In Caxiuanã National Forest at the present time. The FLONA (National Forest) has recently been approved as the second site of the Amazonian LTER (Long-term Ecological Research) program.
